The flats, north of the Boulevard
Ventura Boulevard divides Encino into two very different fencing jobs. North of the Boulevard the land runs flat, and enclaves such as Amestoy Estates and Clark Gable Estates sit on wide, level lots with long drives and generous frontages. Here a fence is about presence and privacy on open ground, and the expansive clay soil under the posts is the thing to plan for, since it swells and shrinks with the seasons and asks for footings sized to hold a line straight.
The hillsides, south of it
South of the Boulevard is where Encino earns its reputation. The hillside pockets, Rancho Estates below the reservoir, Encino Hills, Royal Oaks, and the gated streets off Mulholland, sit on canyon lots and ridgelines cut from Topanga Group sandstone and conglomerate. Those parcels fall inside a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone under the LA Mountain Fire District, so near the house we steer homeowners toward non-combustible iron, tubular steel, or block, and keep solid wood set back the way the brush-clearance rules expect.
What the slope asks for
A hillside fence in Encino is an engineering problem before it is a design one. Canyon lots need graded benches, retaining, and drainage that carries runoff off the slope, and posts are set into bedrock or deep footings so a run holds for years. Santa Ana winds funnel through the canyons and load a fence like a sail, so exposed runs are built heavier, and on a view lot we keep the boundary open with iron so the canyon and the city stay in sight. It is the same care whether the fence guards a flat estate lawn or a steep parcel south of the Boulevard.
Height splits at the Boulevard. North of it, on a lot forty feet or wider, the City allows eight feet at the sides and rear; south of it the hillside designation generally holds you to six.

How much does a fence cost per linear foot in Encino?
Chain link installs at roughly $18 to $40 per linear foot here, wood at $30 to $60, vinyl at $40 to $70, and wrought iron at $50 to $120. Put 150 feet of six foot wood privacy up and it generally lands between $4,500 and $9,000, before hillside footing work or an ornamental iron frontage carries it higher.
Do I need a permit to build a fence in Encino?
Fences in Encino are permitted by the City of Los Angeles through LADBS. A standard residential fence at or below the allowed height normally needs no building permit. Go over six feet, add a retaining wall, or work in the public right of way and one is required, and hillside lots south of Ventura Boulevard often need a grading permit for the slope work beneath the fence.
